Loss of memory or inhumane apathy?

With the elections and IPL having surrounded us completely for the past couple of months we seem to have forgotten the larger issue at hand. Whatever happened to the 26/11 episode?! Ajmal has been on trial for over a month now and nothing has resulted out of that. The evidences and testimonials keep pouring in but somehow the judges haven’t taken a decision. Ajmal keeps getting the benefit of the top class security and newspapers and what not. His lawyer keeps defending him and with the silliest of points, has the advantage of delaying the whole decision making process. With entire Mumbai standing up collectively as witness to the gory incident, nothing seems to be sufficient for the judges to simply sentence the man for an eternity of hell!

Why is this so? I was outraged when the decision to put him on trial was announced. Clearly, that didn’t help much. But now with the trial going on, I just pray that it ends soon. We can’t go on like this.

It is unfair to the brave policemen and commandos who died saving us.
It is unfair to the foreigners who stepped into this land for a vacation.
It is unfair to the commuters on CST who didn’t know what awaited them.
It is unfair to the relatives of those unfortunate ones who didn’t see the light of the day.
Why the hell do we have to be so fair to this one man, then?!

From November 26, 2008 to the current date, we complete 6 months after the tragic incident. Bloody half a year! People seem to suffer from a severe lack of memory. What happened to the peace march initiatives? What happened to the ‘Bash the Government’ campaign?

Or is it the sad fact that we just don’t care?!

  1. Good point. But the problem is that we still are striving to come across as a fair democracy and cannot suddenly leave aside all the legal procedures and come up with a verdict. If that is done, the citizens will be no doubt happy. But there will be surely some people who will take up the issue of India not having followed THE LEGAL PROCEDURE. Amir Ajmal Qasab is afterall a foreigner in this country and this is an international issue that has to be tackled carefully.
However, at some point even I can't help wondering why even the legal proceedings should take so much time, given that we have eye-witness testimony and live video footage of Qasab committing the crime. Now is the time for the judicial system to give away a quick verdict on such a crystal clear case. The alleged criminal is here, not one but many proofs of the crime are here and now he is himself even admitting it.

  2. The international angle is true. I totally agree. and again, your point that we are a fair democracy is also valid. And that is exactly why india is such a soft target for every damn fellow and terrorist group!

Now that he has confessed also, nothing has reaped out of it. Nothing-absolutely nothing seems to be enough for the law!

  3. Ouch! You touched a very raw nerve there!
Our judicial system (to be renamed as Joker's Judicial System) is totally screwed up and is laden with beaurucratic rat-crap. Insipte of killing so many officers, citizens, beseiging a whole freaking hotel and being caught on camera, and caught red-handed by officers, he's allowed to enjoy the tightest possible security, that too guilt-free. From whose money? The same people's hard earned tax money that he effing set out to kill!

This is a hard slap on our face and utter mockery of our system. I'm sure somewhere there are more of his kind sitting and laughing their a$$es out on us: "@$# you Indians! You can't even prosecute one of us caught red handed, forget about stopping us! You are @$#ing bunch of idiots". I feel so ashamed for our people :( I'm totally at loss of words (and quite frankly, emotions) to express my disgust over our totally @#$ed up judicial system.

But... I'm sure if you slipped a big bundle of Mr. Ghandhi under one of Judges' or Ministers' table, this man will disappear from the face of earth, like he never existed!

As to people, that is true, politicians take us for a ride because of our extremely short attention span. Nobody cares about what happens to fellow Indians as long as they get to see effing cricket matches on the idiot-boxes! I'm sure if you declared there would be no cricket finals, you will find more Indians outraged and nation-wide uproar than over 26/11 incident. Total bandh, public transport set on fire, shops torn down, and what not :(
We are to blame on this too, at least a bit.
